Description: This is a French Antique Drafting Set in a walnut/walnut veneer Case. On the top, there is a brass stringing inlay and a brass name plate which is blank. Inside, it has a lift out tray filled with the original drafting instruments. The instruments appear to be a complete set plus so unusual is that it comes with a proportional divider. Underneath the tray it has a wooden French curve, an antique brass pencil holder, and a dip pen with a hand fitted handle and three brass nibs. The set is a bit larger than the normal set we have found over the years. It measures 9.25 x 7.75 x 2 inches and with everything shown, weighs 1 pound, 8 ounces. The Set is in wonderful condition for its age. Our antique expert places it being made prior to 1900 but there are no longer any markings that would indicate its maker. Typically, these sets had a fold down flap made of heavy paper and silk padded on the front to protect the instruments. This one's flap pad has been removed and lost at some point. Sadly, that is where you often find the name of the maker. The lower part of the lock has also been lost. The latch does help it stay closed but does not lock. Other than that is is difficult to find any flaws. It is quite unusual to find a set this size; unusual to ever find a complete matching set of instruments, unusual to find a proportional divider; unusual to find an antique French curve drafting instrument; and unusual to find antique pens and pencils. The antique brass protractor compass is a nice bonus also. These sets were once the state of the art for draftsmen, architects, engineers, etc and they make a very thoughtful gift for anyone in those professions today. We can ship it at no charge at the listed price and invite your close inspection.
