Born in Glasgow to a prominant Glasgow family. Initially studied engineering, but was a self taught artist encouraged by Muirhead Bone (q.v.). Served in WWI, but was discharged due to ill health and returned to the front as a war artist. He was commissioned by the Corporation of Glasgow to produce 50 drawings of the front line and munitions factories in the city. Lived in Glasgow until 1915 and also in London after 1927. His work was exhibited at the Peoples Palace, Glasgow, in 'Glasgow's War Artist' 2014.
