Frederick Arthur Farrell (1882-1935) - Monte Carlo

Description: Frederick Arthur Farrell (1882-1935) “Monte Carlo” Original Signed Drypoint Etching An intriguing departure both in style and technique by this highly collectible artist. An exceptionally finely detailed, almost miniature detailing, using a brown ink printed on a cream wove paper. Very different in both style and scale and choice of ink colour to the majority of Farrell’s work. This genre and technique he appears to have chosen for a series of etchings made in the Cote D’Azur often depicting the towns and sights along this coastline. This depicts Monte Carlo in Monaco and I believe is the view looking east towards the “Jardins de Saint Martin” and the Cathedral atop the rocky outcrop which overlooks the harbours on both sides. Signed by the in pencil, along the lower central plate mark and margin in his characteristic miniature hand writing. Titled in pencil left lower corner sheet. Shows Fine Art Trade Guild embossed stamp left lower margin. Plate: 16cm x 37cm. Sheet: 25cm x 44.5cm. The etching is loose, paper hinged from the top and mounted as shown using cream colour modern mounting board measuring overall 30cm x 50cm with an aperture of 18cm x 38cm. Frederick Farrell was a self-taught etcher and watercolour painter of portraits and topographical subjects from Glasgow. He exhibited widely including the R.A. and Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts. As an etcher he was greatly influenced both stylistically and with advice by Muirhead Bone. Prior to this he studied civil engineering in London. Farrell was the Official Artist with the 51st Highlanders 1914-1918 Condition is excellent with no foxing, tears, damage or creasing plate or margins. Mount is great condition - new.
