First printings, both published 1959 (the year after Joliot-Curie's death), 8vo, trade paperbacks, the first in very good condition, partly unopened, light bumping and wear, the second in similar condition, text tanning, light bumping and wear; the second book has the embossed name stamp of Sergio DeBenedetti. Excellent association copy; DeBenedetti, a nuclear physicist, left Italy during the Fascist era to work with the Joliot-Curies in Paris, with the recommendation of physicists Bruno Rossi and Enrico Fermi. There he stayed until 1940, when he biked south out of Paris as the first Nazi's began their French invasion from the north, eventually reaching Lisbon, and again with the intercession of Fermi, began his life in the United States, including work at Oak Ridge, finally securing a position after the war as a physics professor at Carnegie Tech, now CMU. Thus, he would have been one of the lab assistants who contributed work to the work of the Joliot-Curies that earned them the Nobel Prize in 1935 for their work on atomic structure. 224 / 289 pp. Very Good.
