William Butler Yeats, who lived from 1865 – 1939, was an Irish poet and one of the foremost figures of 20th-century literature. A pillar of both the Irish and British literary establishments, in his later years he served as an Irish Senator for two terms. Yeats was a driving force behind the IRISH LITERARY REVIVAL, and helped found the ABBEY THEATRE, where he served as its chief during its early years. In 1923, he was awarded the NOBEL PRIZE in LITERATURE as the first Irishman so honored for what the Nobel Committee described as "His inspired poetry, which in a highly artistic form gives expression to the spirit of a whole nation." Yeats was born in Sandymount, Ireland, and educated there and in London; he spent his childhood holidays in COUNTY SLIGO. He studied poetry in his youth and from an early age was fascinated by both Irish legends and the occult. From 1900, Yeats's poetry grew more physical and realistic. He largely renounced the transcendental beliefs of his youth, though he remained preoccupied with physical and spiritual masks, as well as with cyclical theories of life. "Selected Poems" are from "Crossways" (1889), "The Rose" (1893), "The Wind Among the Reeds (1899), "In the Seven Woods," (1904), From "The Green Helmet and Other Poems (1910)," "Responsibilities (1914)," "The Wild Swans at Coole," (1919), "Michael Robartes and the Dancer," (1921) which includes "Easter 1916," "Solomon and the Witch," "The Second Coming," "To Be Carved on a Stone at Thoor Ballylee," "The Leaders of the Crowd;" "The Tower 1928," which includes "Sailing to Byzantium," and "A Meditation in Time of War," (1928)," "The Winding Stair and Other Poems" (1933), "Words for Music Perhaps"---which includes the "Crazy Jane" poems, "A Woman Young and Old," From "A Full Moon in March (1935)," "Last Poems," (1936-1939), Narrative and Dramatic: "The Wanderings of Oisin 1889," "The Old Age of Queen Maeve 1903," "Baile and Aillinn, 1903 " "The Shadowy Water 1906," "The Two Kings 1914," and "The Gift of Harun Al-Rashid 1923." 522 pages, including Notes, and an Index to Titles and an index to First lines.
