Frank Zappa "Mofo Project" 2xCD (the "Freak Out!" album + SEVENTEEN rare tracks

Description: Here we have a CD prize for FRANK ZAPPA fans: The Mofo Project/Object, released in 2006 by Zappa Records. This double CD set is half reissue, half archival release, a redone and hugely expanded version of the Mothers of Invention debut album Freak Out. (There was also a even longer 4-disc variant available directly from the Zappas, but there's too much marginal stuff there for all but the most fanatical Zappa heads. This double gets the balance right, picking the best unreleased material from these sessions.) Disc 1 was intended to supplant the original 1987 Rykodisc CD, in which Frank remixed some cuts for the worse, then attempted to compensate for Freak Out's primitive stereo presentation by drastically re-equalizing the album and covering it in a layer of digital reverb. The result doesn't flat-out suck, but is still inferior to the original 1966 mix. The Mofo version gets it exactly right and is a joy to revisit. It's Disc 2, though, that functions as the main selling point of the set. We're presented with alternate mixes of various vintages, backing tracks, outtakes, and so on -- all of which are at least interesting, many downright crucial. The liner notes reveal that a surprising source was utilized for several tracks: apparently, Frank kept a mono reel plugged into the desk at all times. What this means is that the sort of material which wouldn't generally be preserved on the multi-track session tape -- say, rough overdub sessions for "Go Cry on Somebody Else's Shoulder" or the "finished" vocal overdub mix of "Motherly Love" -- are present and accounted for, giving a distinct "you are there" feel to the proceedings. Tantalizing tastes of other surprises, like a 1966 soundboard recording, demos and backing tracks are similarly spectacular, as are bits and pieces of "Monster Magnet."
