Description: (From a recent auction in Rockport, Maine) This lively painting was created about 100 years ago and shows the old seaport of Fécamp in northern France on the English Channel. The artist signed "Frank Will" (lower left) and titled "Le Porte de Fécamps" to the lower right. 23" W x 19.75" H x .5"D Fécamp was the chief fishing port in France for cod from the 19th century, into the 20th. This painting is not dated, but seems to have been created in the early 1900s when the fishing was still being practiced by three-masted sailing ships. Steamers were taking over the work elsewhere in Europe, but France was slow to adopt that new technology. The scene is peopled with uniformed sailors and policemen amid barrels of codfish ready to be loaded onto the locomotive on the tracks. Fécamp's ancient Benedictine Abbey is in the background on the right. The artist, Frank Will, aka Frank William Boggs, was born in France in 1900. He began painting as a child and studied painting in the Paris studio of his father, the American artist Frank Myers Boggs. Frank Will developed his own artistic identity and a style all his own. It's characterized by his use of pure colors and vivid strokes to create dynamic works, full of life. He used drawing with his painting to heighten the vitality and sense of movement. Throughout his career, Frank Will held numerous standalone exhibitions in Paris. His works were showcased at the Galerie George Petit in the 1920s, at the Galerie Hector Brame in the 1930s, and later at the Galerie Henri Bureau. He also participated in group exhibitions internationally. He worked mainly in Montmartre, dividing his life between his activities as a musician, and a painter. Neglecting his health, he died in Paris, in 1951, at the age of 50.
