FRANK GODWIN small original art MURRAY A. HARRIS collection, fabulous image 1941

I will not be trying to list all defects, but if I notice a major defect, I will try to point it out. You are bidding on: One small drawing (or painting) by Frank Godwin on the back of a postcard addressed to Murray A. Harris, postmarked Washington, D.C., in January 1941. It looks to me like a combination of ink and watercolor were employed (apparently both pen and brush were used). Some underdrawing in pencil is visible as well. Approximate dimensions, from edge to edge: 4 inches by 6 inches. Overall, this piece is in excellent condition. I am pretty sure that Frank Godwin's role in the Sunday Connie strip ended in or around December 1940, though the Sunday strip did continue to run into 1941. Ohio State University's relevant website reports daily Connie strips that ran well into 1941, but I don't think I have ever seen any of those. My assumption is that this drawing does not portray any of the characters in the Connie strip. Based on hair color alone, it pretty much cannot be Connie. Murray A. Harris is fairly well-known in comic-art collecting circles. An article about him and his collecting activities appeared in the Los Angeles Times in 1995. It states that he began seeking art from cartoonists in 1927. In 1997, the Times reported that he had passed away at the age of 87. The Times put it poetically: "Surrounded by drawings of Flash Gordon, Dick Tracy, Krazy Kat and Price Valiant, retired illustrator and comic art collector Murray Harris died Friday at his home in Simi Valley . . . ."
