Description: Frazetta wasn't known for Biblical pieces. Even still, his work here captures this part of the Bible excellently. For those of you who are unfamiliar with this, I'll tell you... This took place after the Romans had arrested Jesus Christ. The Roman Prefect, Pontius Pilate, known to be a strong, strict Governor, had a short meeting with Jesus. He asked Jesus a few questions regarding what he was accused of. The answers Jesus gave him were not what he expected. Jesus neither denied or confirmed his charges, nor did he beg for his life. Pilate sensed that there was something very special about Jesus. Pilate was not a leader who was hesitant to find accused prisoners guilty and sentence them to crucifixion...but he wanted no part of killing Jesus. He went before the people, and stated that he saw no fault in Jesus, and wanted no part in his crucifixion. It was custom at that time of the year to release a prisoner back to freedom. Desperate to save Jesus, Pilate gave the crowd a choice. He could release Barabbas, a violent criminal, or he could release Jesus. The leaders of the church hated Jesus, as they considered his teachings to be a challenge to theirs. These leaders had the crowd so wound up about Jesus that all they wanted was for Jesus to die. The crowd told Pilate to release Barabbas. In his disgust, Pilate dipped his hands into a bowl of water, and while washing his hands, he stated that he had no part in the crucifixion of Jesus, and he washes his hands of the matter.
