Description: Francis Gary Powers [1929 1977] was an American pilot whose Central Intelligence Agency U-2 spy plane was shot down while flying a reconnaissance mission in Soviet Union airspace, causing the 1960 U-2 incident. Powers began his military career in 1952 with the 468th Strategic Fighter Squadron. In 1956 he was recruited by the Central Intelligence Agency and was a veteran of many covert aerial reconnaissance missions. Powers survived the impact and was captured, held as a prisoner and put on trial for espionage. Powers was found guilty at his trial and was initially sentenced to ten years in prison but was released on February 10, 1962, during a prisoner exchange. On august 1, 1977, Powers was piloting a helicopter for KNBC News when he was killed in a crash in Los Angeles. Listed for auction is a [DS] document signed by Francis Gary Powers.
