Description: This slide is part of a collection aquired from the University of Virginia from the female photograher Frances Benjamin Johnston (1864-1952). In the 1930s, Frances Benjamin Johnston photographed Colonial and early Republic architecture under the auspices of the Carnegie Survey of the Architecture of the South in nine southern states. The majority of the collection focuses on Virginia towns and counties. The collection presents buildings in close to their original state, during a time when architectural alteration or restoration were not as prevalent. This collection of nearly 1000 photographs of 17th, 18th and 19th century buildings in Virginia was acquired as prints by the University of Virginia Library in the 1930s. These slides were taken from those photographs. It is a rare chance to have high-quality reproductions of an early woman photographer who is famous for her portraits, images of southern architecture, and various photographic series featuring African Americans and Native Americans at the turn of the twentieth century. General information: This slide is in good condition and is a discard from a university art/architecture image library collection. All slides are 2 inches by 2 inches and fit any standard projector. I have included photos of the front and back of the slide, as well as pictures of the image projected with a slide projector. Keep in mind: there may be some very minor dust, fading or scratches but slides like this are almost impossible to find. The slides we sell contain some of the highest-quality 35mm images of artworks possible, making them perfect for creating very high-resolution digital images, if that is something you are interested in. There are about a million places that will digitize the slides for you for even less than a dollar a slide. There are limitless possibilities for what you can do with the digital images (though, remember, if you want to do something commercial, you will have to research copyright issues first--I give no assurances of any right of ownership for the image. I am selling these with the idea that they will be used for personal use only). Make the most personalized art calendar ever for yourself. Make prints to hang on your wall. Or just simply enjoy the beauty of projecting the slides. Hit up a thrift store or Ebay. get your own projector for twenty bucks, and transform empty wall space into a beautiful work of art. I have projected slides onto walls 20-30 feet high and the images look spectacular. Even on a small scale, there is no closer experience to being next to a work of art in a museum The slides themselves are a wonderful artifact in and of themselves. They look beautiful hung next to a window so that the light shines through and reveals the image. Some people collect their favorite images and create "slide curtains," which are amazing. Others use back-lit frames to display their collection.
