Description: France: Scarce medal for Rescapes (Survivors) of the Battles of Aisne and the Chemin des Dames in the First and/or Second World Wars. This unofficial medal was created in 1966 by the city of Soissons for veterans of the several battles of Aisne (see Lacombe, Eric. Identification et Cote Decorations, 3rd edition (no date) p. 76). The three battles of Aisne in 1914, 1917 and 1918 resulted in massive French casualties, hence the use of the term "rescapes" (survivors) in the name of the medal. The reverse side of the medal also depicts a military cemetery, indicative of the many military cemeteries in the Aisne area. Veterans of the French 6th Army were also eligible for the medal for their resistance to the German invasion in May 1940. The medal is in extremely fine condition, on what is very likely the original ribbon; with ribbon bar "Aisne 1939-1940," indicating service in May 1940. Authenticity guaranteed; 14-day return privilege (30 days overseas), excluding postage, provided item is returned in same condition when sold. Items will be shipped USPS Priority Mail; will combine postage for multiple purchases. Overseas buyers will be invoiced for shipping costs.
