Description: Auction description France 1890: The Normandy Cliffs on a Visiting Card, Delightful Miniature Painting From a recent Paris auction comes this rare miniature treasure: the sea and the cliffs at Etretat, Normandy, painted with great skill and poetic detail on the back of a visiting card! The artist has signed, lower left, and I am tempted to read the signature as that of Louis Carrand (1821-1899), a distinguished and well-listed Romantic artist with auction prices into the low thousands. But wait, there is also a name on the other side of the card: "L. Carrau." Is that the person who made this picture? Or did Monsieur Carrand have a double life, Carrand/Carrau and an incognito identity? For this seascape picture frankly seems too good to be the work of an unknown amateur. I'll let the next owner decide! The charm is there, in any case. Dimensions are about 2.5 inches by 4 inches. There is some paper toning and surface grime and traces left by an old frame. Very interesting and attractive work nonetheless, and it is moderately priced. Shipping will be $6 within the U.S.. And to see what else I have for sale, please click here.
