The fox's body is made with rusty orange dyed porcupine quills with natural white quills on its tail, neck patch and inner ears. It's eye, nose and outer ear are of black dyed quills. On the outer border of the medallion is tidal sweetgrass. The barrette clasp on back is 3" long The red fox is the largest of fox species and here is a magnificent red fox on a birchbark medallion barrette by Paul St John, Mohawk artist. Foxes are amazing animals, by keeping the rodent population under control they are appreciated by farmers.Their antics as they play with their partner or their young are enjoyed by any lucky enough to observe this. Paul has recently been inspired to make several foxes - there are 2 fox baskets (one fox sitting, other lying down), a quill/birchbark fox necklace with similar barrette and an all beaded fox necklace in this store as I list this barrette Last photo is of Paul with 2 of his other creations Paul St. John lives in Maine near his mother's family. His mother is Passamaquoddy, Maliseet and MicMac. He grew up on the Mohawk lands in New York, his father's homeland and is an enrolled Mohawk tribal member. There are other necklaces of this type by Paul - and some of another type that uses only beading - others beading and quills. Some of those necklaces have matching beaded/quilled barrettes. Paul also makes quill and coiled tidal sweetgrass baskets. These have an quilled animal, bird or Native American design on the top of the lid - find many different styles to choose from in this ebay store as well as dolls, beaded bags, moccasins, knives and more by Paul St John.
