Text description beneath the picture (subject to any spelling errors due to the OCR program used) FOUNTAINS ABBEY. This Abbey is celebrated for the beauty of its situation and the unusual extent of its remains. It stands on the verge of the beautiful park—or rather pleasaunce—of Studley Royal, near Ripon, on the bank of the little river Skell, where the valley contracts into a rocky wooded glen. It was founded by ascetic seceders from St. Mary's of York in the twelfth century; but the great tower of the church, 168 feet high, was only completed by Abbot Huby near the end of the fourteenth. A few years later the great crash came, and the Abbey was seized by the King's Commissioners. The chief feature of this Abbey is the noble Great Cloister, which there is nothing to equal in England. It is a hundred yards long, with a vaulted roof supported by a central row of columns, under what was formerly the dormitory.
