Description: This is an Eocene Knightia fossil fish mass mortality sandstone plate which was collected from the Green River formation from the ancient now extinct Lake Gosiute in the Rock Springs area, Sweetwater County, Wyoming. Wyoming’s Lake Gosiute was a large ancient crocodile-infested water body in a closed basin. This fossilized fish plate is in excellent condition and is from the Eocene time period which makes it approximately 50 million years old. This is a subspecies of Knightia which is called Gosiutychthus Parvus (Gosiutychthus meaning from ancient lake Gosiute and Parvus meaning small fish). This fossil fish type Gosiutychthus Parvuscan can only be found in ancient Lake Gosiute. This fossil fish plate weighs 13 pounds 2 ounces and measures 18.05 inches long by 13.90 inches tall and is 0.88 inches thick at the thickest edge spot. This fossil fish plate is completely natural with no enhancements and is exactly how it was found. Fossils from this location were preserved due to a drought drying up the lake bed which caused the fish to be concentrated into small ponds and puddles where they died due to lack of oxygen. Shortly after flooding caused the kill zones to be buried in mudslides, which fossilized the fish.
