Description: Folio Society - TRAVELS IN WEST AFRICA by Mary Kingsley ‘When you have made up your mind to go to West Africa’ wrote a friend to the 30-year-old Mary Kingsley in 1893, ‘the very best thing you can do is get it unmade again’. Undeterred, she embarked for one of the least explored and most dangerous regions in the world, knowing neither French nor any African languages, having no experience of travel or physical exertion and no contacts. Her avowed intention was to continue her late father’s studies by collecting specimens. She travelled alone, finding hospitality with missionaries, traders and villagers (once by falling through the roof of a hut), and she did in fact bring back several new species of fish, including Brycinus Kingsleyae, which was named after her. The Royal Africa Society was later founded in her memory. In her extremely funny account of her travels, the pleasure and delight Kingsley took in Africa itself stand out. Whether she is battling crocodiles who wish to clamber into her canoe, falling into hunting traps and being saved only by her voluminous petticoats, or scratching a hippo with her umbrella, her enthusiasm is infectious, her light-hearted dismissal of dangers and discomforts a pleasure to read and her sympathy and admiration for those she meets, salutary. The forerunner of writers like Eric Newby, Redmond O’Hanlon and Bill Bryson, Mary Kingsley is as inspiring now as ever. DESCRIPTION: - Introduced by Sara Wheeler.
