The original map was estimated to be a large pirated map of the world published in 1609, based on the Willem J. Blau map of the world published in Amsterdam from 1606 to 1607 (neither of which is extant). In the early 17th century, the artist expanded the images that adorned the tops of world maps in Japan, and completed an unparalleled decorative horseman painting. This work is said to have come from Aizu Wakamatsu Castle, where it was originally painted on the castle's sliding doors. It passed through Ikenaga Meng, a collector of Namban art, and came to be in the collection of the Kobe City Museum. From left to right: Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II, Ottoman Sultan (Murat II), Grand Duke of Moscow (Ivan the Terrible), and Tatar Grand Sweat are dynamically depicted.
