The fan blades slide fairly easily, if my video uploads it seems a little clumsy, mainly as I was recording it one handedly, it works more smoothly with both hands. You may be wondering why one would need a fireplace screen, or a retractable one, and many people may not today, but they were an absolute necessity in the days when homes were heated using coal, and especially cooler places, where cold lumps of coal cast onto a roaring fire could spit and pop, and be thrown out of the fire and cast across a room! There are not that many place where products like coal or wood are solely used to heat a home, so as with most fireplaces, these have become more decorative than functional, but can still be used to set the ambience of a room.
