Description: Just out of a local smoke free house is this fine vintage oil painting of 2 sailing yachts apparently racing in open waters. The artist is M G Friedrich and is signed in the lower right. This Piece Is Likely Inspired By Cape Cod Massachusetts, Though He Is Said To Have Also Painted Subjects From Bermuda And The Mediterranean Sea. Friedrich was born in Strasbourg, Alsace Lorraine in 1908, eventually moving to the South of France where he is said to have became an exceptional yachtsman. He joined the Free French Navy and after World War II he decided to leave the military and pursue his painting. Friedrich became best known as a highly technical and detail artist in the creation of seascape paintings, particularly of coastal yacht racing. Many of his paintings are taken from the Mediterranean and New England coastlines of yachts under full billowing sails, racing through white capped seas. Though he kept his home in Southern France, he would often spend his summers on Cape Cod, where he was known to depict the Kennedy family and friends on board their yachts. His works are in public and private collections throughout France, Germany and the United States. The painting is in good condition with some craquelure. The frame has some scuffs and dings and there is a white paint loss on the filler strip. With the frame it measures about 31 3/4 inches high and about 19 3/4 inches wide. The oil on canvas painting alone measures about 24 inches high and about 12 inches wide. See photos as they are part of the description.
