Description: FINE VICTORIAN SILVER RIMMED COW HORN BEAKER. HALLMARK: BIRMINGHAM 1877. SILVERSMITH: JOHN LINEGAR. VACANT SHIELD CARTOUCHE. This is a fine translucent beaker made of cow or cattle horn. The top edge is rimmed with a broad band of solid sterling silver which is hallmarked and has the mark of the silversmith John Linegar. A shield shaped cartouche is pinned to the body which is vacant thereby enabling a name or initials to be added if desired and possible. The base is fitted with a glass disc. The horn is of a high quality. We have filled the beaker with water to test the integrity and confirm there were no leaks. A tiny nick to the foot rim is the only damage present (See last photo.). Dimensions: Height - 11.8 cm. (4.6 inch.). Top rim diameter - 7.5 cm. (3.0 inch.). Foot rim diameter - 5.0 cm. (2.0 inch.). Weight: 119 grams. Marks: The silver rim is hallmarked and comprises of Queen Victoria's Head facing left, the Lion Passant, Birmingham Anchor and a very worn Date Letter which we believe is a Gothic 'c' for the Year 1877. Alongside within a rectangle is the silversmith's mark 'J.L' for John Linegar. The shield is not marked so we have to say it is white metal but it is most likely made of solid silver. Condition: Excellent. As mentioned there is a nick to the foot rim (See last Photo.) but apart from that there is no other damage to the horn or the silver and no restoration.
