This case was made to carry Cheroots; thin cigars that were very popular in the late 1800's until well after the turn of the century. Fancy risqué` personal accoutrements such as this Gentleman's 3 dimensional hand carved nymphs cheroot case are much more uncommon and were expensive to purchase at the time; and only a Gentleman of means would have been able to afford such a fine smoking accessory. Wealthy gentlemen of means and gamblers desired fancy goods; i.e., a fancy cigar / cheroot holder that would, when occasion required, be brought out of the jacket pocket with great flourish; offering a cigar to their friend or acquaintance with a flair of gentlemanly courtesy. Even then, these cigar cases were considered an object d' art and a status symbol.This is a Mint, Unusual Antique Folk Art Gentleman's Cheroot Case, 3 dimensionally hand carved on both sides with risqué` patterns of dancing Nymphs on one side, and a nude man removing his halo while engaging a nude woman on the obverse side. This personalized piece has a fancy silver shield similar to a painter's palette with an Old English style hand engraved initial. This piece is carved in two halves; each from a single piece of hollowed out select grained wood, with a small brass locking clasp and a small brass fingernail lip on each half used to open the case. The 2 halves are joined by 2 small brass hinges that allows the top and bottom to open 180 degrees. The two halves fit smoothly all around the edges, opens & closes properly, and the two halves of the case snap when closed and stays tightly closed. Inside are the original strings used to secure the cheroots. This unmarked, well made, high quality piece measures 4 1/4" tall x 2 7/8" wide x only 7/8" thick, and weighs 51 grams, or 1.8 ounces, and is of German origin. The inside hollowed out halves are matching; i.e., the same grain pattern cut in half from the same piece of select grained wood that was chosen for it's beautiful natural patterns. The front & back panels are curved, and the corners are rounded. This piece has no damage, repairs or alterations; and is in near mint to mint condition. The only sign of usage is thin surface wear to the lacquer / varnish to small areas of the raised portions of the carving; otherwise, this piece is in extremely lightly used condition. It is very difficult to photograph a shiny object, and some of the images may appear to show imperfections; however, the panels are in minty condition.This handsome, impressive piece would be perfect for any cheroot, cigar, cigarette, tobacco, Gentleman's, Gamblers, century accouterment / accessory, Folk Art or smoker's collection; and could still be used today by a discerning gentleman to carry cigars or cheroots.
