He was originally from the 島田Shimada area of the country of 駿河Suruga (駿河国, today's Shizuoka prefecture), where he studied under 島田義助Shimada Gisuke, the most representative master smith of 島田Shimada school which served under multiple most famous and powerful 戦国大名Sengoku Daimyo, and the leader of 島田三傑Shimada Sanketsu ("the Three Outstanders of Shimada"). During 18th year of 永正Eishou (1504~1521), together with his teacher 義助Gisuke, he migrated to the 小田原Odawara city under the ruling of the famous and powerful 北条Hojo clan, where his excellent skill in sword forging was recognized by the famous Sengoku Daimyo "相模の獅子Sagami no Shishi" ("the lion of Sagami") 北条氏康Hojo Ujiyasu, and, as a great honor, been granted the character of 康Yasu from Daimyo's own name. Since then, he changed the original Mei 泰春 to 康春, and became a 抱え工 Kakae-ko (formally supported smith) of 北条Hojo clan. Not only was he good at producing amazing, aggresive activities in the blade as a 相州伝Soshu-den master smith, but he was also known to be a great 彫物Horimono engraver, as seen in his surviving works. As shown in the photos, this particular blade is an absolutely beautiful and magnificent piece of art. It has excellently forged Jigane with fine grained Hada, accompanied with rich, aggressive actitivies in the Hamon. It's a large and wide blade comparing to average, and the overall Sugata is much like a 寸延び短刀Sunnobi Tanto, which make it feels like a further extra large version of extra large Tanto in hand. The Horimono is also amazing works that pairs perfectly with the blade. On the Omote side: on the top, it's a classic design of thin double Hi engraving known as 護摩箸Goma-Hashi, which refers to the pair of 箸Hashi iron chopsticks used during 護摩Goma/ Homa Budism ritual; Which on the bottom, the Horimono engravings depicts the 行Gyou style semi-abstract variation of 剣巻龍Ken-maki-ryu ("dragon-swirling-sword") that shows a dragon swirling around a 三鈷剣Sanko-ken sword, which is a common representation of the 不動明王Fudomyoou 倶利伽羅Kurikara. On the Ura side: on the top, it's also a Goma-Hashi design; On the bottom, it has four Kanji Chinese characters engraved: 南無天道Namu Tendo —— 南無Namu is a commonly seen Buddhist term, a disrect transliteration of Sanskrit "Namas", which means "respect to"; 天道Tendo is literally translated as "the way of sky/divine", which in the content of Buddhism, refers to the "Deva" —— the divines, the highest among 六道Rokudo ("the six possible forms of existence "). an absolute master piece of art in hand for study and enjoyment, and a strong candidate for a new submition to Shinsa Nagasa: 1 Shaku 5 Sun 6 Bu ~47.3cm or 18.6inches Regarding the whatabout/quality/condition, please carefully examine all the photos and make your own best judgement, the description provided is no more than a rough personal interpretation of the item and subject to inaccuracy/ omission —— all sales are final
