Description: Fine Qing Dynasty Cloud Collar. Exceptional quality stitchwork with abundant use of gold thread and very fine knots. Numerous symbols in the design including, phoenixes, fu lions, persimmons, butterflies, coins and treasures. This quality was quite pricey in its day and would be meant for a person of some rank in society! Yunjian. Circa 1850-1900. Framed on silk under glass. The cloud collar motif was originally used as a cosmic symbol in China. When used on clothing, the cloud shape is a symbolism which represent abundance while the neck opening is a symbolism for the “Sky gate” (i.e. the entrance to heaven).The lobes which point in 4-directions represents the universe.
