Description: This is a signed envelope, dated 1835, by Field Marshall Henry Hardinge, 1st Viscount Hardinge (1785-1856), a highly notable British Army officer and politician. PLEASE NOTE: The signed letter that was originally sent in this envelope is being sold in a separate eBay listing. Hardinge was greatly involved in the warsagainst Napoleon. His left hand was shot off at the Battle of Ligny, two days before the Battle of Waterloo. After serving in the Peninsula War and the Waterloo Campaign, he became Secretary at War in Wellington's ministry. After a tour as Chief Secretary for Ireland in 1830, he became Secretary at War again in Sir Robert Peel's cabinet. He went on to be Governor-General of India from 1844 to 1848, during the time of the First Anglo-Sikh War. Hardinge was later promoted to Field Marshal, and served as Commander-in-Chief of the Forces (i.e. given command of the entire British Army)from 1852 through 1856, during which time the Crimean War was fought. Honorable The Lord Lyndhurst ", of "George St." This was John Singleton Copley, 1st Baron Lyndhurst(1772-1863). The son of a famous portrait painterwith the same name, he was a British politician who served three times as the Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain; first, from 1827 to 1830; secondly, from 1834 to 1835; and finally, from 1841 to 1846. He heldthis office under three monarchs: King George IV, King William IV, and Queen Victoria. The envelope is about 3" by 5". It is postmarked May 6, 1835. Beneath the "George St." address on the envelope is added (in smaller handwriting) a note stating"or Hyde Park Terrace, Hyde Park", if I am readingthe words correctly (see scans). It has an embossed wax seal on the reverse side. The envelope is signed by Hardinge at the lower left corner of the front side (see scans). It is in good condition, with some general wear.
