Description: Felipe Castaneda (1933 - *Mexican), seated woman holding her baby, on an integral square base. Carved black marble signed and dated on the base: F. Castaneda/1991. It measures 20” x 12”x 11”. This is a museum quality piece – one of a kind and rare! Felipe Castaneda is an internationally renowned sculptor known for his enormous talent. He was born on December 16, 1933 in Michoacan, Mexico and in 1958 decided to pursue art. He became an assistant to the world-renowned artist Francisco Zuniga who helped Castaneda perfect his technique. Castenada creates female forms out of marble, onyx and bronze that embody both the traditional and modern sensibilities of Mexico. Forms of motherhood and fertility evoking pre-Columbian culture are coupled with an abstract, stylized interpretation of sensuality. He transforms contemplative expressions and simple gestures into noble artistic expressions. Castaneda has received numerous honors and awards, including recognition from UNICEF in 1980, Israel in 1996, and the International Academy of Modern Art in 1998. It is a very heavy piece (over 80 lbs.) and will need to be professionally packed and shipped. I have been quoted a shipping cost of $1,800. I have, therefore, reduced the price substantially to cover the cost. Local pickup is free.
