Description: Farragut Veteran Association - Port of New York / USS Hartford - Medal The medal has most of the original gilt finish, with the pin brooch having the engraved name “U.S.S. HARTFORD.”I have found very little about this badge except for the basic information. The Farragut Veteran Association was formed in 1883 for those naval veterans who served during the Civil War. In 1899, the association became the nucleus for “The United States Veteran Navy” which allowed membership to Spanish American War veterans. The regular membership badge was struck in bronze, identical to his badge/medal, with the exception of the gilt finish, which may have been for either officers of the Navy or officers of the Association? In addition to the gilt finish the riband for the name of the association is done with blue enamel. There is a provision on the pin brooch for a ribbon, but as of yet unable to determine what it looked like. The “T” bar pin is attached. The badge itself is decorated with an eagle at center above a capstan, with crossed cutlasses & cannons on the sides. It is 65mm in height. The USS Hartford was commissioned in 1859 at the Boston Navy Yard, being a Sloop of War powered by both sail and steam. The ship was to be Admiral David Farragut’s flagship throughout naval operations under his command during the Civil War.How scarce the medal/badge is is uncertain, but of less than a half dozen found in my research, this was the only one identified to any ship other than the USS Brooklyn (from the Spanish War), and the only one in this fine condition.Fine+ condition.
