A handsome reprint by the Grabhorn Press of an extremely scarce work, the original of which is number 79 of the Zamarano 80. Felix Pawel Wierzbicki (1815-1860) was a Polish doctor, soldier and writer. The original of this book was the first English-language book printed in California, and in it Wierzbicki gave a description of the culture, peoples, and climate of the area at that time, even including a survey of agriculture and hints on gold mining. With thirteen drawings throughout by Valenti Angelo (1897-1982), a highly-regarded designer, illuminator and decorator of books over a career that spanned decades, doing much of his early work for the Grabhorn Press and the Book Club of California. ___DESCRIPTION: Green paper boards with a line drawing of miner's implements on the front in black, black cloth spine with a paper spine label, drawing on title page with twelve additional scattered throughout the text by Valenti Angelo, marginal notes on each page; Caslon type, octavo size (9 5/8" by 6"), pagination: [i-iv], [v]-xxx being the Introduction by George Lyman ("Wierzbicki, The Book and the Doctor"), [i-ii] being Prefaces to the First and Second Editions by the Mr. Wierzbicki, (1), 2-101, followed by a 3-page Bibliography by George D.
