It is a large Castericystis sprinklei, a carpoid, from the Middle Cambrian of Utah. Carpoids were primitive echinoderms similar to cystoids, but much rarer. This strange specimen is complete, showing the holdfast, or ''tail'', the body, and the single arm. The structure of the carpoid is beautifully displayed under magnification. The distinct fossil is wonderfully showcased on the colorful plate of shale.
