Description: Exceptional Early Victorian English Sterling Silver Inkstand by Henry Wilkinson For your consideration is this Sheffield England 1857 Antique Victorian Sterling Silver and Colored Glass Inkstand / Desk Standish. The stand measures approximately 13 1/2" x 8 1/2" and weighs 704 grams not including the glass wells. Well marked WH & Co (Henry Wilkinson), Sheffield crown mark, date letter "O" for the year 1857, lion or passant for sterling silver. This was a presentation piece, it is engraved "PRESENTED TO THE REV HT CAVELL, CURATE OF ST HELENS, IPSWICH by the Rector Sunday School Teachers, Scholars, and Friends. As a mark of his esteem for his zealous & affectionate labors among them. MARCH 1858". Just imagine 166 years ago the writings that took place by the candlelight of this wonderful piece of art.The condition of the silver on this rare piece is very good, the glass ink wells unfortunately have not fared as well. Though intact one has been repaired and has considerable damage as shown in pictures, the other well is much better though it has chips to the rim, also shown in the pictures.
