Description: Model 1840 musician's sword dug at Chancellorsville, VA. The remains of the sword measure approximately 21.75" long with approximately 17" being the blade which has heavy pitting, but it is still strong and pretty stable. The hilt has taken a severe blow that tore away the pommel cap and the end of the lower quillen. The end of the tang is bent at nearly a 90 degree angle, and there is a corresponding notch torn into the grip. The grip does remove freely. Please see photos. I cannot imagine the pommel cap being torn away by anything other than a bullet strike or artillery hit. But I honestly have no definitive answer to this. A great dug weapon with a lot of character. I've only encountered about three other dug musician swords in all my years of collecting and selling. Selling as is.
