Description: Extremely rare Rough and Ready Masterson quart size historical flask. The flask has a sheared fire polished lip & a pontiled base. The height is 8 1/4 inches & the width is 5 inches. One side has a bust of Zachary Taylor & a large eight pointed star below bust and the words "ROUGH AND READY" above. The other side has an eagle with thirteen five pointed stars & the word "MASTERSON" above. This historical flask design is listed in "American Glass" by McKearin. The design is listed under #26 form #16 on page 497 on the McKearin "Most Desirable Flasks Group-A" list of 42. Also, the design is listed under No. 77 as G-77 on page 527. McKearin mentions that there are only a total of 10-12 known examples in the colors of clear, deep green, aquamarine. The example we are offering appears to us to be in somewhat of a citron-green color. But, we know that flask collectors often have their own opinions of the different names for specific colors. So, please purchase based on your own specific designation of the color. Well, as far as we know, this is the only known example in this previously unknown color!!! This historical flask, which is one of the most significant & important rarities in bottle collecting, was dug in a privy in Ohio. As you can see from the photos this extremely rare flask is in very rough & in incomplete condition. The surface shows some stains from being under the ground most of its life. This listing represents an affordable example for an advanced collector of modest means. An example for someone who could not afford a complete example &/or who would not want to potentially wait a lifetime (or never be able) to acquire a prime condition example (which could cost as much as $100,000.). When the flask was found it was entirely broken apart at a number of areas & it was in numerous pieces of assorted sizes. As many pieces as possible were carefully glued back together. The result is that a large part of the flask is present. NOTE: Since we put the pics up on eBay the glue holding three sections of the bottle together has dried & come apart. So, the major piece shown in pics is now in three pieces & will require additional assembly. You will note in the pics that we have shown a small group of loose pieces that are also included. However, there are numerous pieces of various sizes that are entirely missing from the flask. The flask was made in the Monongahela-Pittsburgh district of Pennsylvania by an unknown glass house. The flask was most probably made circa 1835-1842. But, there is a slight chance that it may have been made as late as 1847-1850. We will, of course, take great care in packing this flask. It will be packed in multiple very sturdy boxes with lots of padding. Our reference number for this item is #4282.
