Description: Fine original etching entitled "Peabody Doorway" from a plate made by Baltimore artist Don Swann. printed after his death in 1954 and pencil signed and numbered by his son, Don Swann, Jr. The overall dimensions of the sheet are approximately 6 1/2" x 7 7/8"; the dimensions of the etched image field are approximately 4 3/8" x 5 3/4". Unframed, excellent condition. The etching depicts the main doorway to the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, located on Mt. Vernon Place in Baltimore, Maryland. The Peabody is the oldest music conservatory in the United States and one of the world's most highly regarded performing arts schools. Don Swann (1889-1954) was raised in Baltimore and attended the Maryland Institute College of Art. He is known for detailed etchings of colonial and Neo-classical American architecture. Don Swann, Jr. (1911-1998) studied printmaking with his father, attended the Maryland Institute, the Johns Hopkins University, and Princeton University. After his father died, he continued publishing and signing his father's name to ensure etchings were printed from his father's original plates. He later taught etching and continued the Etchcrafters Art Guild started by his father.
