Meidner co-founded the German expressionist group, "Die Pathetiker" with Jacob Steinhardt and Richard Janthur. Although a veteran of the First World War, Meidner's art was declared "degenerate" by the Nazi regime. To avoid persecution, he and his family first fled to Cologne, where he taught art at the Jawne Jewish School and later to England where they lived in near poverty until 1953.
