Description: We are delighted to offer this intriguing mask from a South Seattle estate. This mask is from Western Sudan, Mali, Burkina Faso of the Ivory Coast. It measures approximately 21”high x 12” diameter. It shows wear consistent with age and use. The colors and geometric shapes are archetypal for masks from this area. The particular shapes and colors in the mask as well as the hornbill hold various meanings to the peoples who use them. The Bobo and Bwa are distinct peoples but hold some aspects of their religion in common. They are one of the few peoples in Western Africa who have mostly resisted foreign culture and continue to practice their traditional religions, so traditional masks such as this are still used in ceremonies. This old tribal used mask is in good weathered condition, showing wear, chips and cracks on the edges and high points from use. This beautifully styled BWA buffalo mask from Burkina Faso, the BWA people, also known as Bobo Ule, carve masks which represent protective bush spirits. The masks are painted with a clay based paint. During ceremonies, highly skilled dancers wear these masks. Ceremonies are performed on various occasions which include initiations, harvests and funerals.
