There is an inscription to the first page - 'John Weekley May 12, 1914 from Aunt Agnes'.The book has been covered in sticky-backed plastic! 'Professor Ernest Weekley (1865-1954) was a British philologist. From 1898 to 1938 he was Professor of Modern Languages at the University of Nottingham. One of his pupils D. H. Lawrence married his wife, Frieda. He was the author of a number of works on etymology including: The Romance of Words (1912/13/17/22/25), The Romance of Names (1914/14/22), Surnames (1916/1917/1936), A Concise Etymological Dictionary of Modern English (1924), Words Ancient and Modern (1926), More Words Ancient and Modern (1927), Adjectives and Other Words (1930), Words and Names (1932), Something About Words (1935) and Jack and Jill: A Study in Our Christian Names (1939).' This is a 2nd Edition / 1st Printing (States - 'Second Edition March 1914'). Condition: Book - Good - rubbing/bumping/wear to the corners, edges and covers, a spine lean, slight marking and discolouration to the covers, opens v.easily to several pages (binding just showing through in a couple of places), v.slight creasing/bumping to several page corners, some marking to the page edges, some foxing and discolouration to the page edges and a few pages, some darkening to the top page edges, soft tanning to the pages and there is a previous owner's name (fills whole page) and a v.small bookseller's label inside.
