Description: Item : This tall Shalako kachina has been beautifully hand carved by Hopi artist Ernest Selina. It stands 27" tall including the base and 11" across. The Shalako naturally leans forward and stands on its own. It has been carved of cottonwood. It is signed on the bottom, Ernest Selina Hopi 2nd Mesa and identified as the Hopi Shalako kachina. This kachina is in great condition. The Shalako kachinas are messenger kachinas carrying prayers between the worlds and bringing moisture and rain when needed. The Shalako ceremony is performed in late November or early December after the crops have been gathered. Their departure at this final ceremony of the year is a prayer for rain to fill the rivers, wells and springs before summer comes.
