Description: Vltava" - the exercises held in South Bohemia in September 1966 and covering the area of the Vltava River, were the largest joint maneuvers of the fraternal armies of the USSR, Czechoslovakia, East Germany and Hungary since the conclusion of the Warsaw Pact. The exercises used the most modern military equipment at that time; offensive and defense were carried out according to the latest military science, strategy and tactics. Among other things, the exercises worked out issues of interaction between friendly armies, the coordinated use of forces and means according to a common plan. Forces involvedAs the commander of the exercises himself, Marshal of the Soviet Union A. A. Grechko, noted, the Vltava exercises were not command and staff exercises, they were large exercises in which a large number of troops from the four allied armies participated - Czechoslovak, Hungarian, Soviet ( under the leadership of General P. M. Plotnikov) and German. The exercises reproduced battles with the use of nuclear weapons. Powerful landing turboprop aircraft AN-12, fighters, attack aircraft participated in the exercises; in the struggle for dominance in the air, supersonic aircraft were used. The maneuvers used helicopters to lay mines, tanks to cross deep ditches, and other modern warfare techniques. At the end of the exercise, with the help of a tactical landing force, the Vltava River was crossed on the move. The results of the exercisesIt is very important to note that warriors of different nations and languages fought on both sides of the “belligerents”. But, as noted by the high command, cooperation and interaction of units turned out to be at the highest level. Referring to the results of the military exercises "Vltava", A. A. Grechko said: "These exercises were the culminating point in the combat training of the troops who took part in them." After the end of the exercises, Czechoslovak and allied troops participated in the parade in the city of Ceske Budějovice. The First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia, President of Czechoslovakia A. Novotny addressed the united allied troops at the parade. As Russian military historian Pavel Andreevich Zhilin notes, the Vltava exercises were of great military and political importance. Historian Pyotr Vasilyevich Sokolov notes that the exercises showed an increased combat readiness of the troops, their ability to conduct military operations with joint efforts. They once again confirmed that the defense capability of the socialist states is quite high.
