Description: Elysian Fields Quarterly The Baseball Review Vol. 15 #4 Fall 1998 World Series Issue - Featuring Fred Merkle on the cover- 96 pages (with a number of black & white photos and illustrations) - Very good condition. Elysian Fields Quarterly (The Baseball Review) was originally founded as The Minneapolis Review of Baseball in 1981 by Ken LaZebnik and Steve Lehman. It began publication under its current title in 1992. Elysian Fields Quarterly was published briefly in 1992–1993 by William C. Brown Company of Dubuque, Iowa. Elysian Fields Quarterly ceased publication in 1995 due to financial difficulties, but was resurrected by Lehman and another contributor in 1998, at the urging publisher, Tom Goldstein and was published contuinuously until 2007. This outstanding magazine was an excellent resource for the history and literature of baseball. In addition to the cover story on Fred Merkle's lifetime burden by Chris Christensen; in this issue there are approximately 20 stories and other features including ballpark commentary by Don Dewey; reflections on a game at Fenway by Richard Crepeau and on little league baseball in 1960's Brooklyn by Jernigan Pontiac; fiction by Richard Peterson ("How to Write a True Baseball Story'); Joanne Azen Bloom (minor league wives, girl friends, and life on the move), Thomas Snee (a stubborn Iowa farmer finally takes his family to a Cubs game); Josh White (a mythical Red Sox vs. Cubs World Series); poetry by Hannah Wilson, Rebecca Parfitt, John Judson, and others; sportswriter Chuck Pickard on triples; a profile of Jeff Campbell's "Hungry for Music" baseball CD's; book reviews of Invincible Summer, The Ripening of Pinstripes, Home Field: Nine Writers at Bat, and Field of Schemes: How the Great Stadium Swindle Turns Public Money into Private Profits and much, much more. There is some rubbing on the cover and reasing on the top right corner (see the scan), but this magazine is still in very good condition. Please see the scan so you can judge the condition for yourself (the magazine in the scan is the one you will get). No collection of baseball publications is complete without this outstanding magazine. Check out the scan for the great photo of Fred Merkle of the New York Giants on the cover.
