This extremely limited edition variant is one of ONLY 313 copies pressed on yellow-in-black "Eclipse" colored vinyl*... [* This is a sealed record and the photo is an example only. Each record's color-in-color yellow and black pattern will be unique.] Originally released in 1971 by Blue Note (a division of Liberty Records at the time), this 2023 re-release is mastered and cut from the original analog tapes by Warren Defever at Third Man Records, and pressed at the label's Detroit location on 180-gram vinyl. The album is presented in a cosmically gorgeous tip-on jacket. The "313 Eclipse" series is a partnership between Blue Note and Third Man Records, comprised of just five Blue Note titles selected by label president Don Was, all Detroit-themed ("313" being the Detroit area code). Each is yellow-in-black colored vinyl. "Genesis" was recorded at Rudy Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on February 12, 1971. Musicians on the recording are Mr. Elvin Ray Jones on drums of course, Joe Farrell (tenor and soprano saxophone), Dave Liebman (tenor and soprano sax), Frank Foster (tenor sax, alto flute, clarinet), Gene Perla (bass, electric bass). It The Blue Note release, catalog # BST-84369, dropped in September 1971. In a legendary year of avant-garde jazz surging with jazz fusion, jazz funk, psychedelia and jazz rock, spiritual jazz, free jazz, and post-bop, Elvin Jones and his quintet of drums, bass, and sax trio was not given many nods in its day. John Coltrane, Elvin's former band leader himself released a pair of free jazz records the same year. The month "Genesis" came out was also the month of Mahavishnu Orchestra's "The Inner Mounting Flame," "Fenix" by Gato Barbieri," Alice Coltrane's first Wurlitzer organ release "Universal Consciousness," — and the Monterey Jazz Festival.
