Elkington Sterling Silver Creamer with Zodiac Design Possibly Unique

Description: For Your Consideration we are proud to present this extremely rare possibly unique Sterling Silver Creamer by Elkington & Company manufactured in London, England in the year 1869. Advanced collectors of Elkington silver plate are very familiar with the beauty and desirability of the Elkington Zodiac silver plate tea set. What we have discovered is the Elkington Zodiac cream pitcher that is part of the tea set. Not manufactured in silver plate, but rather in sterling silver. We have never before seen this creamer in sterling silver. It is unbelievably rare, and possibly unique. When we inspected the creamer, we noticed that there are a few tiny defects that could not have been produced by usual wear. These defects are not tiny "dings" as sometimes seen on creamers and sugar bowls. Rather, they are casting artifacts. This entire piece has been cast, and there are tiny imperfections that are obviously artifacts left over from the casting process. We have seen this type of imperfection on cast sterling silver before, so we know how to recognize the phenomenon. (see pics for details) We can only assume that Elkington made this pitcher as a trial run to produce the tea set in sterling silver, but never actually produced it due to the difficulty in casting. As such, this creamer is most likely a prototype, and was sent to the assay office and hallmarked for sale, but no additional pieces were produced. We cannot find any other example of the Elkington Zodiac tea set made of sterling silver. If someone has seen the Elkington Zodiac pattern in sterling silver, please contact us and let us know.
