This disc compiles all five records (three 12-inch singles and two 7-inches) from his Plays series, German imports issued separately in 2001 and 2002 -- the 12-inches by Staubgold, the 7-inches by Botrop-Boy. These amazing records were intended to serve as tributes to some of Ehlers’ aesthetic heroes, one to each title: avant-garde composer/revolutionary Cornelius Cardew, Delta bluesman Robert Johnson, free-jazz saxophonist Albert Ayler, filmmaker/actor John Cassavetes and experimental novelist Herbert Fichte. Needless to say, these performances are "tributes" in a very different sense, with Ehlers choosing to "refer" rather than sample, allowing the work of the artist to inform his own creation rather than manipulate the existing work of another. Ehlers’ abstract compositions channel inspiration rather than mimic it. “Everyone is sampling,” Ehlers said. “Sampling is the figure of historic devices in digital music. My idea is not to sample, but to refer to historic places and figures.” Each piece is radically different, each brilliant. These recordings gained considerable attention for Ehlers beyond electronica music circles, gaining rapturous, well-deserved praise from experimental and avant-garde music devotees. One can study its overwhelming abstract complexities, or simply bask in its passion -- either way, there’s little doubt Plays stands as an early masterpiece of 21st century electronica.
