Description: Fine 19th Century oil painting on canvas of a highland river landscape with cattle with distant town on estuary - possibly a view of Inverness ? - any ideas ? by Edward Hargitt 1832-1895. The painting is an excellent example of the artists work. Signed lower right and dated 1876 - see photo. In good clean original condition, minor craquelure commensurate with age. The painting measures 24" x 16" and 33" x 25" in its original swept gilt frame. Provenance - From the collection of the Wallasey Golf Club, donated by Sir Ernest Royden who was ex-captain of the club Edward Hargitt was born in Edinburgh and studied art in the Royal Scottish Academy and was a fairly good painter of landscapes. These paintings yield high prices today, auctioned at Christie's. He became also an ornithologist and developed into an expert on woodpeckers. He was the author of the monograph on Picidae for the Catalogue of the Birds in the British Museum, published in 1890. During later years, he prepared 1300 drawings of woodpeckers for a proposed monograph. The original monograph “Book of Reference to the Picidae” (1895) is currently kept in the funds of the State Darwin Museum in Moscow, Russia. Track Page Views With Auctiva's Counter
