Description: This beautiful woodblock print by Edgar Hargreaves depicts the a man seated on a bench, a picture of urban life in his native San Francisco during the Art Deco era and most likely during the depression. As a railroad inspector, Hargreaves most likely saw many scenes of people impacted by the hardships of the 1930’s. This piece seems to express such an observation. The paper’s size is 9 inches in height and 6 inches in width with the print area of 5 1/2 inches by 3 3/4 inches. A 1” tear at the left top does not intrude on the art itself. Yellowing and aging of the paper with a small 1/4” tear on the left is to be expected of a piece this old. The print is an original, signed by the artist himself, and produced using woodcut printing techniques. The subject of the print captures the essence of American urban life, possibly during the depression. The style of the print is black wood block ink on paper creating a poignant piece of urban art, with a unique touch that showcases Hargreaves' artistic vision. This piece is unframed. English born Edgar Hargreaves settled in San Francisco, California in 1899. After serving in the United States Army during World War I, he enrolled at the California School of Fine Arts. He worked as a car inspector for the Southern Pacific Railroad and painted and etched California scenes during his leisure time. Hargreaves exhibited throughout his lifetime, showing at the San Francisco Chapter of the Society for Sanity in Art at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor and the San Francisco Art Association.
