He served in the United States Army during World War I and later enrolled at the California School of Fine Arts. Hargreaves worked as a car inspector for the Southern Pacific Railroad and painted and etched California scenes during his leisure time. He exhibited throughout his lifetime, showing at the San Francisco Chapter of the Society for Sanity in Art at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor and the San Francisco Art Association.
