Description: Ed Waitkus boldy signed GPC certified Authentic by PSA/DNA and slabbed in their custom lucite holder. Postmarked from his hometown in Massachusetts before the start of 1949 Spring training, the very season during which he was shot by an obsessed fan in one of the earliest cases of criminal stalking.Waitkus, the major league first baseman whose baseball story was woven into a famous baseball novel by author Bernard Malamud titled "The Natural" (1952) and in the 1984 blockbuster baseball film by the same name starring Robert Redford, signs this GPC “Best wishes Eddie Waitkus.” Waitkus had an 11 year career in the majors playing with four teams, most notably the Chicago Cubs and the Philadelphia Phillies. After only a few years into what seemed a very promising career, in 1949 an obsessed female fan shot him in the chest while pretending to be an old classmate of his. Waitkus nearly died on the operating table several times and although recovered enough to play baseball for several years afterwards, was never able to fulfill the promise of his "natural" talent often referenced when he was a rookie. Waitkus died at an early age (53) in 1972. Holder measures 7.25 X 4.25. Very good condition.
