The name "Windle" refers likely to "Wind Hill" a rise of land buffeted by the winds blowing from the west off the North Irish Sea. Other common spellings in relation to this place are: Windhull (1201), Wyndhill (1320), Wyndhyll, Wyndill, Wyndell and Wyndle as late as the 16th century.
