Description: EC AROINS & CO MITRE HAND SAW - SHARP AND SMOOTH CUTTING! Here is a EC Atkins mitre box hand saw in ready to use condition. It has been carefully restored to make a great user or piece for a collection. The only apologies on this saw are a tiny hole in the toe end of the back, a chipped upper horn, and some minor pitting and staining due to age. This saw was “Manufactured Expressly for the Marsh Mitre & Picture Frame Machine - Rockford, IN” by EC Atkins & Co. The saw is a 24” mitre box saw. It is freshly sharpened crosscut with 12 ppi, 12 degrees rake, 20 degrees fleam, and 4-1/2” depth of cut. The plate has some stains and minor pitting from many decades of use, but no rust remains. This was a quality saw for its day (and still is today). The etch quoted above is faint, but clear and readable. The original handle finish was mostly intact when I received this saw, so it received a coat of oil and some paste wax to bring out the beauty and to seal gaps in the original finish. All my saws have been refinished with care. First I either clean the plate with a bit of elbow grease. If needed, I soak the saw plate in evaporust for at least 24 hours to neutralize the rust before sanding up to 2000 grit. Care is taken to save any etch. The saw plate is then waxed to protect. Effort is taken to maintain existing finish - it is only removed if necessary. They are smoothed out with steel wool, oiled, and shellaced. I apply 10 coats of homemade shellac and sand with 0000# steelwool between each coat. The handles are beautiful, and feels fantastic in the hand. Hardware is sanded and polished.
