Dezember 1769 als Sohn eines Bauern in Schoritz auf der damals schwedischen Insel Rügen geboren. Er studierte Theologie und Geschichte. Als Geschichtsprofessor in Stockholm, an der schwedischen Universität Greifswald und später in Bonn setzte sich Arndt, der ein engagierter Gegner Napoleons war, in Wort und Schrift für die Einheit Deutschlands ein und verfaßte eine Vielzahl vaterländischer Freiheitslieder, die rasch populär wurden. Zeitweise arbeitete er als Sekretär des Freiherrn vom Stein. Arndt wurde 1820 aus politischen Gründen von seinem Amt suspendiert und erst 1840 rehabilitiert. 1848/49 gehörte er der Frankfurter Nationalversammlung an. Obwohl Arndt schwedischer Staatsangehöriger war, kämpfte er zeitlebens für die innere und äußere Freiheit der Deutschen. Ernst Moritz Arndt gilt als einer der führenden Historiker und Dichter des Vormärz. Er starb am 29.
