Description: Easy Model Platinum Collection 37224 Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-3 Display Model Soviet Air Force 12th IAP, Moscow, USSR, 1942 1:72 Scale Length WidthMikoyan-Gurevich MiG-3 4.5" 5.5" The MiG-3 was ordered into production in December 1940. First deliveries of the new fighter to front line fighter squadrons occurred in April 1941. The MiG-3 remained in series production until the last week of December 1941, when it was discontinued due to the unfortunate unavailability of the AM-35A engine. Total MiG-3 production amounted to some 3120 aircraft, and 50 more were built from available parts during the first half of 1942. The MiG-3 remained in service almost to the end of the war; wrecked aircraft were often cannibalized to keep others flying. Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-3 Designed as an improvement upon the largely defective MiG-1 prototype, the MiG-3 was first flown on October 29, 1940. By 1941 nearly 1,000 MiG-3s were in service with the Soviet Union, but the aircraft's overall performance proved to be a disappointment. Designed for high-altitude dogfighting, the MiG-3 rarely encountered ideal conditions over the Eastern Front, where it was outclassed by the German Bf 109. Although the MiG-3 was not well regarded, several Soviet aces were able to exploit its hidden advantages-the third leading Soviet ace of WWII, Aleksandr Pokryshkin claimed a number of his 53 official air victories in a MiG-3.
